| Non timber forest products (NTFP) are fruits, nuts, resins, mushrooms, fibers and medicinal plants. They are an important tool in addressing poverty issues for indigenous and rural communities, by contributing to food security, health, well being, and income. Historically little attention has been paid to these resources. However, during the last 30 years they have been getting attention due to new commitments to address rural poverty and the recognition that forests can provide multiple products and services. This research describes the current situation related to NTFP in Chile, in terms of information available, state of the resources, beneficiaries of the programs, commercialization, training, funding, and what should be the approach Chile needs regarding NTFP development. A broad group of informants including researchers, collectors, and governmental officials, among others, was reached through a questionnaire sent by email. This research reveals that Chile does not have a clear approach about NTFP development, and a lot of work is needed. This research concludes that it will be favorable for Chile to have a main office in charge of the sustainable development of NTFP. That will help to compile the information available, plan research, and coordinate with the different actors involved in the NTFP area. |
