Abstract/Summary:
With more and more oil wells being dug and gas plants being built, rural Alberta and the oil and gas industry have become neighbors, business partners and enemies. The purpose of this research was to gather insights into how groups with competing and sometimes conflicting interests over land use are currently communicating and to determine how to improve these communications through a more effective use of information, supporting tools and education, and in particular, a toolkit proposed by Synergy Alberta. Synergy Alberta is an umbrella organization who supports multi-stakeholder engagement between the Alberta oil and gas industry, community and the government. A semi-formal approach of standardized open-ended, interviews was used to collect data with participants. The majority of interviewees believed that an information toolkit was necessary and that their preferred sources were not necessarily the internet but local print media, as well as magazines of direct interest.
