Abstract/Summary:
revious laboratory and field studies using the University of Nevada-Reno permanganate passivation technology have demonstrated that sulfides in rock samples are passivated with the additions of potassium permanganate, magnesium oxide, and calcium oxide at a pH of 12. One field study in particular, "The Multi-cell Acid-Rock Drainage Treatment Technology Evaluation Project" at the Gilt Edge mine site demonstrated that the permanganate passivation technology could reduce contaminants of concern by 90% or greater in the leachate samples taken during the three-year study. A conceptual design and cost estimate using the permanganate passivation technology on a heap leach pile of spent ore is presented in this thesis. The passivation design employing a reduced reagent dosage rate, other than that used in the Treatment Technology Study, is estimated to be possible at a cost of...
