Abstract/Summary:
This research used a detailed kinetic model, to study the effects of H2O2 on both homogenous and heterogeneous oxidation of elemental mercury in coal fired boilers. Using H2O2 was shown to enhance elemental mercury in flue gas, as well as, enhancing the site fraction (site coverage) of adsorbed mercury, on the surface of the fly ash. The sensitivity analysis of Hgp showed that the formation of HgCl enhanced the adsorption of mercury on the surface of fly ash. However, the creation of HgCl2 through the reaction between adsorbed mercury and atomic chlorine showed an inhibiting effect on the formation of Hgp. This reaction has the greatest enhancing effect on the oxidation of Hg0 . In the presence of H2O2, increasing the ash loading (which increases the area available for adsorption), did not increase the Hgp. This decrease in Hgp is because of the increase in the concentration of HgCl2.
