Abstract/Summary:
The thesis "Historical perspectives on environmental awareness: Case studies of lobster management and Integrated Pest Management in Nova Scotia 1890--1965" explores the development of environmental awareness in Nova Scotia between 1890 and 1965. The thesis contrasts the image of nature created by the provincial tourism industry with environmental challenges faced by individuals employed in the natural resource sector. The tourism industry promoted the image created by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in Evangeline: a tale of Acadie, claiming Nova Scotia to be the ideal pastoral escape for city-weary American tourists.; The reality of Nova Scotia's resource-based economy in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was, however, one of declining prosperity. The case studies herein of the lobster fishery and the apple industry provide an account of government, industry personnel, fishers and farmers engaging in inquiry and experimentation designed to promote ecological and economic sustainability.
