Abstract/Summary:
The behavior of ozone in water and the techniques evaluating its performance in disinfection were studied. The first aim of the project was to model the main parameters of ozone depletion (instant ozone demand and rate of depletion) in six different waters of Montreal's region. The second aim of the project was to validate the CT calculated for real scale ozonation tank with biodosimetry. Biodosimetry is an evaluation technique used to evaluate UV's disinfection performance, which associates bacteriological inactivation with applied UV doses. The technique will be used on ozonation process in this study.; The modeling of instant ozone demand showed that ozone applied dose controlled the behavior of the parameter, water temperature having no impact on instant demand value.; The rate of depletion k was modeled according to ozone applied dose (DA) and water temperature (T) under the form ln(k) = a*DA + b*T + c.; CT validation by biodosimetry presented many technical problems, but it was shown that the technique could be applied to real scale ozonation tanks. The biodosimetric validation was done only on Montreal's ozonation tanks. The biodosimetric curve, with which the validation was made, was developed with the ozone residual concentrations and bacteriological inactivations measured on a pilot-contactor.
