Abstract/Summary:
Three diverse chemistries of six-membered heterocycles are the subject of this document. Chapter one of this dissertation delineates the studies concerning a Prins cyclization strategy for the construction of the bis-tetrahydropyran carbon skeleton of SCH 351448. Chapter two focuses on investigations directed toward the incorporation of nitroxide precursors into highly-crosslinked polymeric networks with the goal of generating selective oxidation catalysts upon unmasking of the nitroxide moiety. Chapter three describes the synthesis of several acetonide derivatives and the development of an empirical method for the prediction of absolute configuration for this class of heterocycles based on molar rotation.
