Abstract/Summary:
Modal testing of a steel bridge pier frame is carried out in the laboratory to gain insight on the sensitivity and dynamic characteristics of actual old structure systems, which have been subjected to deterioration from operation in the field. The procedure and theoretical basis of updating the theoretical finite element model by modal testing results are presented in the thesis. The updated finite model can be used to assess of the capacity and performance and remaining service life of the structure. The study of the environmental influences and uncertainties on field vibration modal characteristics is part of a long-term monitoring project of the Confederation Bridge at Carleton University. The present study compliments the Confederation Bridge monitoring project to make advance in the practical application of vibration based structural health monitoring techniques as structural condition assessment tools.
