Abstract/Summary:
Pigeon pea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.], a crop of great importance in tropical countries, is affected by pod anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum spp. The objectives of this investigation were to study the vertical and temporal distribution and incidence of Colletotrichum spp. on a pigeon pea field. A sampling tower was designed to accommodate Petri plates with oatmeal agar and exposed them for ten minutes. Alternaria, Aspergillus, Cladosporium Curvularia, Drechslera, Fusarium and Penicillium prevailed in all samplings. All Colletotrichum gloeosporioides colonies were recuperated during the morning hours, at 94, 180, 190 cm from the ground, with a frequency of 0.009. All C. gloeosporioides isolates examinated were pathogenic to pods and presented by PCR amplification, a band of 600 pb molecular weight, approximately. RFLP analysis presented three band pattern for all isolates. Sequencing analysis of DNA showed that isolates belong to G. cingulata .
