Previous qualitative studies have shown the Deaf community faces unique challenges in receiving quality, culturally sensitive health care (Andrade-Pereira, & De Carvalho, 2010; Harmer, 1999; Steinberg, 2001 & 2006). These studies have highlighted a need for communication skills training to improve providers' perceptions and skills related to communicating competently with Deaf patients. This thesis attempts to answer the call. A review of literature and a formative research identified three areas for the training: Deaf culture, current laws and regulations concerning communication access, and intercultural communication skills. Working in collaboration with a local Deaf advocacy agency, Deaf Inc., the researcher designed and created the training modules and a skills-based training video. |
