Abstract/Summary:
Flying High Over Sweetwater, is an in-depth historical examination of the Women Airforce Service Pilots of World War II. By tracking the WASP from creation to disbandment and then recognition as veterans, an injustice of American society as well as clashing gender roles was brought to light. This treatment provided a comparison of American society in the 1940s and the 1970s, and how the WASP story was impacted by changes within those two separate Americas. Each chapter of this historical treatment examined the different perspectives of the struggle including the government, WASPs, and the media in both the 1940 and 1970s. By comparing the varying viewpoints of the issue, and how those perceptions evolved over time, overall changes in society and cultural development became evident. By renewing discussions about the WASPs' thirty-three year struggle for veteran status the WASP voice was finally heard and a new America was born.
