Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to explore how satisfaction in romantic relationships was related to jealousy associated with social networking sites (i.e., Facebook and Myspace) and the following dimensions of trust: dependability, faith, and predictability. The hypothesis was that greater social networking site jealousy and less trust would be predictive of lower relationship satisfaction, after controlling for ethnicity, age, gender, and length of relationship. A correlational study was conducted with 584 students from a midwestern university. A survey was administered to obtain scores for social networking site jealousy and trust (i.e., the independent variables) and relationship satisfaction (i.e., the dependent variable). A positive relationship was found between dependability and relationship satisfaction, faith and relationship satisfaction, and length of relationship and relationship satisfaction. Social networking site jealousy was not found to contribute to the variance in relationship satisfaction when tested simultaneously with other variables in the regression model.
