Abstract/Summary:
The relationship between the province of Quebec and other francophone communities in North America is not a new subject, but our current understanding has taken a particular form. Based on the belief that Quebec abandoned French-speaking populations outside the province in the 1960s, current relations are seen as attempts to make reparations for the past rather than being the outcome of an authentic bond. Indeed, this is what is suggested by our analysis of statements by community leaders both within and outside of Quebec, and of academic writings on the subject. Using sociopolitical and historical analysis, the goal of this research is to show that relations between Quebec and francophones outside Quebec can also be characterised by a strong sense of solidarity, illustrated through actions and political positions. Since the 1990s, this solidarity has been renewed and rethought in newer contexts, such as globalization. This thesis aims to better understand the transformation of the ideas and practices of Quebec towards the French communities in North America.;Key words: Amérique, États généraux du Canada français, État québécois, francophonie, francophonie hors Québec, mondialisation, nationalisme, Parti libéral du Québec, Parti québécois.
