| An analytical procedure was developed and adjusted to the needs and availability of accident data in Puerto Rico to identify hazardous intersections. The study area included seventeen municipalities in the Western region of Puerto Rico that are representative of the Island highway network. The accident database of the Accident Analysis Office of the Department of Public Works corresponding to calendar years 1997, 1998 and 2002 were analyzed. Queries were developed to identify trends, and filter data corresponding to the study area. A statistical analysis of the accident database including box-plots, cross tabs, and descriptive statistics was combined with visual inspections to accident prone intersections and strategic interviews to prosecutors, police officers and engineers were performed to assess the safety related issues associated with hazardous intersections.
