Abstract/Summary:
As the Roman Republic collapsed through civil unrest, the way opened for a coalition between Julius Caesar, Pompeius Magnus, and Marcus Crassus to take control of the Senate. For the next eight years, this First Triumvirate governed Rome, but while the public recognizes the name of Julius Caesar, Pompey and Crassus are relatively unknown. Even in academia, when considering the First Triumvirate, the focus has largely been on Caesar, but this does not mean that either Pompey or Crassus is any less worthy of remembrance.;Examination of the primary and secondary literature assesses the lives and careers of Pompey, Crassus and Caesar in relation to their roles in the Triumvirate and places in history. A survey of museum exhibits relating to the triumvirs, and their portrayal in various media genres investigates how knowledge of the triumvirs survives in public memory.
