Abstract/Summary:
This thesis revisits the juxtaposition of two popular female images of World War II: Rosie the Riveter and the Wartime Homemaker. In exploring mass propaganda and oral history, it becomes clear why Rosie has become so popularized compared to her lesser-known counterpart. The analysis explores public history and the private stories of how individuals remember. While it can be assumed that how we remember these women will differ from how they personally remember their experiences, there is overlap between these women's roles and memories. The public and private are intertwined -- and often dependent on each other.
