My final project consists of the development of a physical education curriculum for emotionally disturbed middle school children at the Red Jacket Education Center (RJEC). As of now there is no physical education curriculum for these students at the RJEC. The students at the RJEC are a special education population which makes it a challenging environment. Although this curriculum was designed for emotionally disturbed middle school children, it can also be used in a customary physical education program. The goals of this curriculum are to increase student's physical fitness levels including reducing obesity if necessary, and introduce games, sports, and activities that can be participated in throughout life. In addition, all units will meet the New York State Standards with some modifications if needed. The New York State Standards include personal health and fitness, a safe and healthy environment, and resource management. As a physical educator it is important that activities meet these standards so students benefit from physical education. The units in this curriculum consist of soccer, flag football, tennis, volleyball, kickball, project adventure, basketball, frisbee games, floor hockey, dodgeball games, baseball/softball, and fitness. The research that took place to build this curriculum include experiences through prior graduate courses, conversations with other physical educators, and research through the internet, books, and journals. I believe that while constructing my final project I have become a more knowledgeable physical educator and a better person.
