One approach to delivering environmental education is family-based programs, in which the family both participates in and delivers the program. This qualitative research explored the process and results of families' use of the book Earth Adventures in the Halifax Region, which is an example of this type of program. In-depth interviews and field observations were used to gather information about the families and the operation of the program. Families were previously interested in the outdoors. Many parents viewed the book as a tool to spend family time outdoors, as their children showed more enthusiasm for participating in Earth Adventures outings than previous family hikes. The flexibility and adaptability of the program were highly valued components. Parental leadership and involvement were key determinants of the success of the program. This form of family-based program is more accessible than other approaches to environmental education. Further research is needed to understand the outcomes of the program, but it appears to have the potential to enhance the development of an appreciation of the outdoors and nature.
