| The purpose of this project was to create a curriculum for healthcare professionals to provide education about the sexual health needs of patients with physical disabilities. Patients with physical disabilities have the same needs as non-disabled patients to have healthy sexual relationships. Having a disability affects sexual relationships, along with unique barriers that impact self-esteem, sexual performance, and accessibility to reproductive healthcare services. Extensive research was conducted to collect data on the reproductive health concerns, including risk factors for HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, which are unique to the disabled community. The curriculum incorporates modules on sexual health and wellness among the disabled community, mechanics of sex, intimate relationships, self-esteem, and HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. It is hoped that this curriculum will inform healthcare professionals about the necessity of providing accurate sex education to disabled individuals in order to help promote optimal sexual health and enhance their quality of life. |
