Abstract/Summary:
This study, modeled after a communication audit, examined the relationship between communication and faculty members' attitudes toward assessment at Central Missouri State University. The survey method utilized a questionnaire consisting of three sections of Likert-type questions and one section of demographics. Results indicated the type, amount, and source of communication regarding assessment may affect faculty attitudes toward assessment. Faculty members especially needed information forecasting and predicting assessment's impact on them; information outlining potential personal or political gain from assessment; and information providing instruction in the assessment process itself. Additionally, differences in colleges (Applied Sciences and Technology, Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education and Human Services), years worked at Central (long--17 or more, medium--6 to 16, short--0 to 5), and having three plus years department assessment in place (yes, no) further described faculty attitudes and communication needs.
