Exploring an expanded model of recovery experiences: The impact on work performance outcomes and work-life conflict

Abstract/Summary:
This study investigated the ability of a stress management and work-life balance intervention (i.e., Achieving Balance in Life & Employment; ABLE) to increase recovery experiences as assessed with a 10 factor expanded model of recovery experiences (Stevens, 2011). I also examined the impact of recovery on work performance outcomes (i.e., job performance, organizational citizenship behaviours, and personal initiative) and work-life conflict. Participants were 139 employees (intervention treatment group, N = 72; control group, N = 67) from various organizations. Overall, recovery partially mediated the relationship between participating in the intervention and the three work performance outcomes; such that participation in the intervention increased recovery, which in turn had significant, indirect effects on work performance outcomes. Compared to the control group, participants in the intervention experienced significant increases in five of the 10 recovery experiences.
