Abstract/Summary:
The goals of this Master's Degree Project are to evaluate the recycling program in the Town of Okotoks, to examine the impacts of recycling on urban environmental quality and natural resources, to analyze the forces of, and barriers to, community participation in waste reduction practices, and to develop recommendations for effectively increasing waste reduction and encouraging public participation to achieve social, environmental and economic sustainability in Okotoks.; Recommendations, which are directed principally to the local municipality, are: (1) Strengthen education and advocacy; (2) Adjust approaches according to market fluctuations; (3) Increase drop-off locations for recyclables; (4) Provide curbside collection service and a streamed waste processing system; (5) Limit household garbage and enforce bans on some recyclable materials; (6) Initiate a regional waste reduction plan; (7) Experiment with public private partnerships in a receptive and structured way.
