Abstract/Summary:
Papermaking pulps can be characterized in terms of permeability and compressibility parameters. In this work, a method and apparatus for characterization of pulp was developed. Experiments were conducted on a variety of pulps, and the observed behavior was consistent for all pulps. By varying pressure applied to a pulp mat, it was possible to attain mats of various consistencies. Application of the Kozeny-Carman equation allows for obtaining specific surface area and specific volume. The obtained parameters were used in simulation of the two filtration models and the results were compared. Compressibility experiments on a pulp mat were conducted. From compressibility studies, as well as from modeling results, it was concluded that time effect, loading rate and loading history are essential when describing the drainage behavior of fibrous suspensions.
