Abstract/Summary:
In the repetitively pulsed electron diode, pressure pulses and anode temperature transients were observed for carbon-carbon anodes. The pressure pulses coincided with each electron pulse. The initial pulses increased if the anode were placed in the diode from ambient atmosphere. Temperature transient response was observed to be different depending on whether the anode was placed in the diode from the ambient atmosphere or having been subjected to a series of electron beam pulses.; The hypothesis for the origin of the pressure pulses is stimulated desorption. Pressure pulses are consistent with stimulated electron desorption as opposed to thermal desorption because the pressure pulses correspond to frequencies of relevance to the operation of the electron diode. The hypothesis for the difference with the temperature transient response was the multilayer adsorbed to the surface of the anode.; The investigations into these phenomena include a discussion of the experimental setup, anode specifications, electron beam, and electron beam interaction with the anode. The research centered on electron beam interaction with the anode, including surface and transport issues. The analyses related to the pressure supported the notion that the pressure pulse is caused by elastic scattering electron stimulated desorption. The electron diode inductance contributed to desorption. The analyses related to the difference in the transient temperature response between “unconditioned” and “conditioned” states of the same anode support the idea that the adsorbed multilayer affects thermal transmission in the anode caused by phonon transport induced by the pulsed electron beam.
