Abstract/Summary:
This paper presents a simplified, yet comprehensive, approach for the design and analysis of bonded composite joints. The algorithm uses a graphical user interface to easily define necessary joint parameters and display analysis results. The calculations for the adhesive stresses are based on bonded joint theories developed by Hart-Smith. Laminates should be near symmetric since induced bending from in-plane load is not considered. The adhesive is modeled as an elastic-plastic material with a strain-energy failure criterion. The software incorporates options to analyze various bonded lap joint configurations (single lap, double lap, stepped lap, and doublers).
