Abstract/Summary:
Large eddy simulation (LES) of the three-dimensional turbulent flow around a two-dimensional stationary square prism is carried out using standard Smagorinsky model. Benchmarking has been provided through the whole extent of the flows. Both the LES time-averaged and the ensemble-averaged flow fields have been compared to available experiments. Throughout these comparisons it has been found that LES can be successfully used to investigate the bluff body related flow dynamics.; LES approach has been used to help understand fundamental as well specific aspects of square prism flows that have not been addressed yet due to experimental limitations. The time and phase-averaged flow properties are compared with data from the experiment of Lyn's square prism flow at the Reynolds number of 22,000 (Lyn et al. 1994, 1995). The near wake and the shear layer formation zones are investigated and particular vortex dynamics features in the base region are found.; Moreover the intermediate wake (16 < x/D <26) topology is afterwards investigated. The LES results are compared to a HWA experiments. The questions on the proper use of the Taylor hypothesis as well as the determination of the convective velocity are addressed.; Finally, a base-slot aerodynamic control method is investigated. The results are compared with data from wind-tunnel test and the controlled-flow dynamics is presented.
