| Both Epicyclic gear trains and reciprocating pumps have been used for years and their advantages are well documented. This paper proposes a configuration that combines the advantages of Epicyclic gear and reciprocating pump to come up with a new kind of pump called the Epicyclic Gear Pump. The kinematics of the pump is discussed in detail and the working of the pump is described. The pump will have the behavior of a number of reciprocating positive displacement pump acting in parallel. The pump will, however, be very compact due to its configuration and its efficiency will depend on the optimum utilization of available space. Using features of IDEAS, the pump is modeled in the mechanism simulation module. Data like Force, Acceleration, Torque etc., is then transferred for response dynamics and the dynamic stress acting on the pump is calculated. Finally, certain nonstandard parts are analyzed for prediction of stress life based on the Goodman's criteria. Further development of the Epicyclic gear pump leading to an engine similar to the rotary engine is left to future research. |
