This thesis describes the design of an experimental system that is used to verify a numerical model of an Electro-Magnetic Acoustic Transducer (EMAT) developed at the University of Toronto that incorporates skin and proximity effects. Further, the system was used to show the influence of skin and proximity effect on the AC resistance of and EMAT coil. The model is shown to be able to predict the ultrasonic wave produced by two experimental EMAT coils to within +/-10%. The model is unable to accurately account for subtle variations in coil geometry. The model and experimental system show the potential benefit of designing low aspect-ratio-conductor EMAT coils is significant. Suggestions are made to improve the model and experimental system in the future.
