Abstract/Summary:
Greenwys are linear, open spaces of various widths and lengths. They are planned, designed and managed for multiple functions, take many forms, and operate at various scales. The Greater Vancouver Regional District's (GVRD) Regional Recreation Greenway Program offers a unique example of interjurisdictional greenway planning. This research project presents an evaluation of this program's process and outcomes, based on a qualitative, formative framework. Program institutional arrangements, planning, decision making, and management, implementation, and assessment are explored via a literature review, participant observation, and a series of in-depth interviews with program participants.; The research results demonstrate that participants have high acclaim of the Greenway Program's successes in terms of process, and that it is too soon to provide judgment with regards to the success of implementation. Fifteen recommendations are offered, suggesting potential improvements to both the program and with a view to future greenway planning. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)...
