Abstract/Summary:
his thesis provides a comprehensive investigation of small-signal stability and dynamic interaction phenomena of static VAr compensators (SVCs). It also contains systematic control design approaches to overcome the SVC control instability problems and to assure robust performance of SVC voltage regulation.;A systematic method is developed for computer formulation of power system linearized state equations including network dynamics. The modular nature of the proposed method makes it flexible for inclusion of additional devices and control models. Based on this formulation, a computer program is developed for small-signal analysis of large power systems. The program is capable of representing the network and the associated apparatus based on either differential equations or phasor relationships.;The dynamic performance of SVC voltage regulation is studied with special attention to dynamic interactions involving SVCs. In particular, the following issues are investigated: (1) instability of SVC voltage control loop in multiple SVC applications, (2) interactions of SVC controls with the resonant modes of series compensated lines, (3) interactions of SVC controls with torsional modes of steam turbine-generators.;A pole shifting design algorithm is developed for coordination of multiple SVCs and other controlled devices, and to resolve the instability problems caused by various dynamic interaction phenomena. Based on the use of existing classical control functions, the controller parameters are optimized such that the overall system is stabilized, and the original characteristics of individual control loops are preserved.;As another alternative, ;The proposed design algorithms are successfully applied to a multiple SVC system. The...
