Abstract/Summary:
Woody species of Tarleton State University's Hunewell Ranch in Erath County, Texas were inventoried and cataloged to determine the absolute dominance, species frequency, and relative species frequency of those occupying the various soils and communities present on the property. Trees, shrubs, and woody vines were included and considered available as browse to the livestock and wildlife present on the ranch. Based on absolute dominance, species frequency, and relative species values, dominant trees included Quercus stellata, Quercus marilandica, and Quercus fusiformis. Shrubby dominants were Juniperus ashei and Juniperus pinchotii . Dominant woody vines included Smilax bona-nox, Smilax tamnoides and Toxicodendron radicans. A total of thirty-three woody browse species were catalogued. Inventory results indicate a woody overstory more characteristic of the Central or Western Cross Timbers Region of Texas than the Eastern Cross Timbers. A key to the catalogued species was constructed and should be a valuable management and research tool for those with an interest in Cross Timbers flora.
