Abstract/Summary:
Survival and growth in freshwater were measured for three pedigreed strains of triploid Atlantic salmon and their diploid contemporaries. Both mixed-sex and all-female populations were investigated.;Survival was monitored over a 15 month period beginning at fertilization in November. Significantly lower survival was observed for triploids between fertilization and the development of eye pigmentation (P ;The competitive effect of rearing diploids and triploids communally was also investigated. The best performance was observed when the two ploidy types were reared separately. As the proportion of diploids in the tank increased, the mean weight of both the diploids and the triploids decreased. However, in order to significantly change the mean weight (P ;Based on the results from this investigation, the freshwater performance of triploid Atlantic salmon should be considered commercially acceptable in New Brunswick aquaculture.
