Abstract/Summary:
This is a two-part creative project. The following is a description of each part.; Part I. The Big-Fish Theatre Company: Imagining the possibilities. The first part of this project consists of the preliminary plans to establish a small non-profit professional theatre company in Chautauqua, New York. It includes an exploration of the necessary steps needed for business start-up, including development of the artistic concept, as well as practical application.; Part II. Kateri's journey: A Native American on the way to sainthood. The second part of this project is a play in monologue form about the life of Kateri Tekakawitha, an Iroquois girl who was born in 1656 in what is today Auriesville, New York. After being converted to Roman Catholicism she lived at the Jesuit mission of Saint Francis Xavier in Quebec, Canada and died in 1680 at the age of 24. In 1884 the Jesuits submitted a petition for her canonization, in 1943 she was venerated (first step toward becoming a saint) by Pope Pius XII, and in 1980 she was beatified (declared blessed) by Pope John Paul II.; The play is one example of how European influences began the cycle of acculturation in America during the 17th century, affecting many Native American lives.
