Abstract/Summary:
The turn of the century brought a set of new paradigms to the meaning of the arts in general and of literature in particular. Defined by the multiple aporias of globalization as well as by the contradictions of the struggle between centering and decentering epistemological tendencies, both Contemporary Peninsular Literatures and Critical Studies seek to create a ground that sculpts the amorphous post-Francoist panorama.; The argument that this dissertation claims as crucial for the understanding of the new literary terrain is based on the prominent relevance that mass-media technology (personal computing capabilities, massive use of information highways, etc.) on the reconfiguration of the literary scene. In order to validate this thesis, several fields other than literature need to be explored and discussed so that the meaningful and spreading presence of technology (both as form and content) in the domains of fiction can be considered as a defining feature of the contemporary social paradigm.; Therefore, a combination of writers from different nationalities (but primarily Spanish) and film directors are studied in this thesis especially in regard to their interpretation of technology. Their texts range from a critique of the alienating abuse of technology (Manuel Rivas) to the celebration of the social and political modifications that digital machinery entails (Lucía Etxebarria and Suso de Toro). In between, the more prudent approach of Eduardo Mendoza uses these technologies to explore the advantages that they bring to literature, but from a perspective that goes beyond the text itself (for example into the realm of promotion and visuality).; My goal is to elucidate how these authors and film directors share the common feature of searching subversive behaviors through technology. Transgression, therefore, is a recurring subject in this study, representing the renewed anger in the younger layers of contemporary society who have begun to revolt against capitalist inertia and disaffecting globalization.
