Abstract/Summary:
This study looks at how the elements of dance, drama and religion are interrelated components that give Native American dancing a synergy of metaphysical universality. Dance in this study is defined as using space, time and force, locomotor and non-locomotor movements and composition. Drama refers basically to character, plot, theme and spectacle. It is also defined as the sequence of events or story, presented to an audience. Religion, as used in this study, is includes the beliefs, ideals, practices, theology and spirituality. It is not presented as institution, building or written doctrine. Four Native American tribes are discussed, the Hopi, Lakota, Tiwa Pueblo and Cherokee, as well as a ceremonial dance for each tribe, and intertribal powwow and social dancing. We see how the oral traditions of Native Americans add significance to the dancing. Included in the study are these dances: the Snake Dance, the Deer Dance, the Sun Dance, the Eagle Dance, the Big Butterfly Dance, the Jingle Dress Dance, Men's Traditional Dance and the Hoop Dance.
