This study examines the English language needs of a national rugby team based In Southern California. The project describes a discourse-based English for Specific Purposes (ESP) for players, including descriptions of relevant speech acts, vocabulary, and linguistic rituals for rugby players.;An ESP curriculum was developed based on theoretical principles developed by systemic-functional linguists. One unit of teaching is included as a sample of the method described. The activities provided support the theory of language socialization, thereby providing a model for any language learning population who does not fit into the traditional method of classroom learning. |
