Abstract/Summary:
The Doctoral Performance and Research submitted by Sarah L. Gillespie, under the direction of Daniel Grabois at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Musical Arts consists of the following:;I. Written Project: "The First Point of Resistance: A Descriptive Pilot Study of the Larynx and Vocal Folds during Horn Performance." This 60-page written project is a study of the vocal structures as related to Philip Farkas's teachings, addressing questions such as: What is the typical motion of the vocal apparatus during performance of various pitches or dynamics? How can teachers use new scientific data to enhance horn pedagogy and performance? Video and audio footage was recorded, using RT-MRI technology, of the motion of the vocal apparatus of six subjects performing slurred, tongued, and secco staccato articulations at varying dynamics and ranges. Measured and descriptive data is presented as well as an explanation of the mechanics of larynx and vocal fold used in horn performance.;II. Concerto Recital, 3/7/2013.
