Abstract/Summary:
The presence of urban wildlife, multiple benefits associated with wildlife, and public interest mean that wildlife must be considered in urban design projects by landscape architects. In Canada, however, as recently as 1987, almost 60% of landscape architects still considered the requirements of wildlife in less than 25% of urban design projects (Dunster 1987). The goal of this thesis was to present a model for the translation and synthesis of ecological data into a format that can be used by landscape architects to integrate wildlife information into the urban design process.;The Ecology and Design Integration System (EDIS) was created and consists of design keys and design approach synopses to obtain a design approach from the literature, and matrices containing wildlife information to be used with the identified design approach. The EDIS was applied to three urban case studies to illustrate its utility and areas requiring future research were identified.
