South Africa is currently celebrating the success of its new constitution. The final draft of the document has only recently been ratified by the country's constitutional Assembly. After turmoil, uncertainty and years of struggle, the nation is now experiencing a democratic birth.;This thesis analyzes the historical background of the constitution, its structure and its focal role in the future of South Africa. Important aspects of this groundbreaking Constitution include a critical balance between the various branches of government, a comprehensive bill of rights and a representative National Assembly and President. The new constitution positively reflects South Africa's social, cultural, economic and political heritage. This innovative document, accented by its sound structure, represents a rebirth for the nation. With its broad acceptance and widespread appeal, the Constitution will prove successful in South Africa's democratization process.
