Numerous applications nowadays involve sophisticated and automated identification techniques. Tracking of merchandise, luggage or even cattle have become standard procedure, and several of other markets are potential targets for the identification industry. Low-cost and security are some of the considerations that govern the design of an identification solution, and radio-frequency identification device (or RFID) is one among others.; In this master thesis, we first paid attention at gathering the necessary knowledge involved in the design of a RFID system, especially when relevant to a long range system, and a large scope of techniques found in the telecommunication domain is covered. Among those techniques hereby presented, backscattered modulation appears as the one of the most appropriate since it simplifies the task of building plain and cheap tag units. This moves most of the system's complexity towards the RF interface of the reading unit, and therefore we put most of our efforts at designing this interface. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)...
