Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this replication study was to examine the effects of food availability and household demographic information on childhood obesity. Food availability, marital status, parental education, and household income were measured through a questionnaire completed by 33 parents with children attending a public school in Western New York. Height and weight was measured in each child and age was determined. BMI was calculated, and those above the 95 th percentile for age were classified as obese. Of the 33 children, 18% were found to be obese, 82% were not. Chi-square analysis did not show any significant differences in the food availability and demographic information of obese and non-obese children. Based on the results of this study, there is no relationship between food availability and family demographics and obesity in children.
