Abstract/Summary:
This thesis presents a quality integrated manufacturing information system. The research proposed a system called Integrated Quality Manufacturing System (IQMS) that adopts an initiation mechanism in Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP II). The mechanism contains a performance measurement system (PMS) to induce and sustain continuous improvement in manufacturing companies. The mechanism obtains data of various production activities from MRP II. The purpose of IQMS is to determine the priority in execution of quality improvement programs for the production processes according to their manufacturing performance.; The research contributes to the development of a model for the MRP II with the incorporation of mechanisms to initiate a change of operations in the organization towards Total Quality Management (TQM). A structural analysis technique was used to develop a model and methodology for the integration. In the structural analysis, an IDEF model of a reference system structure was created to illustrate and describe the integration.; A set of strategy-related performance measures are identified from an established taxonomy for manufacturing. Although the comparison of the performances among the different processes is subjective, an objective model is proposed to provide the long-term and organization-wide continuous quality improvement. In this model, a fuzzy set of quality measures is introduced and a numerical quality rating is calculated for each production process.; This research maps out the use of an object-oriented data structure for enhancement of the PMS. It discusses reusable templates as building blocks for a PMS based on an object-oriented modeling approach. An object-oriented data model is proposed to monitor production schedule execution status.; The performance of IQMS is compared with a system that has inconsistent behavior towards execution of improvement programs through a simulation experiment. The simulation experiment projected an increase of approximately 20% in output within the specified due dates. It also shows that the proposed model is superior in the major competitive capabilities including quality, cost flexibility, delivery reliability and speed.
