Abstract/Summary:
Theoretical and practical changes in land use planning are driven by an evolving western worldview. The increased utilization of structuralist principles within the western worldview has lead to the growing body of sustainable development theory. Several chapters are used to discuss the development of structuralist principles and their application to sustainable development including the presentation of a "Transportation Management Plan" case study which attempts to apply the principles to a real community in Colorado. Detailed analysis highlights the social, economic and environmental constraints to the sustainable development based initiatives, such as demand management, which are recommended in the Transportation Management Plan and focuses on how to remediate these constraints in order to move toward a more sustainable transportation system.
