The phosphite-triester method has been investigated as a means of labelling polymers with fluorescent probes. The appropriate methodology was developed using naphthalene and pyrene chromophores to label triethylene glycol and tetraethylene glycol. The intermediates to the desired compounds have been isolated and fully characterized.; The product phosphates can be used for cyclization studies. For comparison, the glycols also were esterified at both ends with pyrene. The two resulting compounds were found to cyclize with a rate of ca. 2 {dollar}times{dollar} 10{dollar}sp8{dollar} s{dollar}sp{lcub}-1{rcub}{dollar} in toluene and tetrahydrofuran. |
