Dimethyl phosphite is an important chemical intermediate, which has widespread availability in chemical industry. With the rising demand for dimethyl phosphite, more attention was paid to its production process. In this paper, study was carried out to design synthesis reactor and chose the optimal parameters of operation, aiming at enlarging production capacity and increasing yield.In the process of dimethyl phosphite synthesis, the synthesis reactor occupies the core, and the parameters of operation concern the reliability and stability of the reactor. How to design the reactor and determine the parameters of operation was critical to the goodness of the final industrial unit.The main job included three steps. Firstly, the optimal technological conditions were screened on the base of experimental data. After profound studying the kinetics (including macro and intrinsic), the principle for synthesis reactor design was determined. Moreover, in order to examine the design principle, a pilot-plant was built. After surveying the operational aspect and production efficiency of the pilot-plant, integrating systemic analyses of the existing plant, the design was modified. Finally, the reactor design for the industrial unit was improved and completed, and some new methods were used to solve the problem of mixing raw material. This method named as step by step ensures reliability and stability of plant.On the base of the research, an industrial unit with 5000t/a production capacity was built in Zheiang Xin'an Chemical IndustrialGroup Co. Ltd. This process unit has simplicity in operation. After testing and adjusting, its operational aspect agrees with the expected result. It runs stably and meets the demand of safety and cost reduction. It has biggest production capacity in China while its yield was highest, reaching the requirements of design. All of those show the design was feasible and effective.Good performances make the plant have theoretical guide to productive practice and process modification, enhance the technological level of enterprise, and put a solid foundation for modernization of plant supervision.
