Abstract/Summary:
This study provides an analysis of character as an element of narrative, specifically in detective fiction; Sherlock Holmes serves as a representative of main characters in this genre.;The first part of the study introduces the importance of both character and detective fiction to narratology. It includes a survey of relevant views of various branches of literary theory regarding analyses of these elements. The second part of the study is an examination of the characterization of Holmes and of his functions as a main character. This section also includes a discussion of the benefits of character study.;The thesis concludes with a closer look at detective fiction, including its reception by readers and its vast opportunities for further research.
