Abstract/Summary:
Imperialism (Colonialism) and Otherness feature very prominently in the literary and historical works of Europeans in the 19th and 20th centuries. As Achebe's and Conrad's novels reveal, European and African perspectives on these concepts are generally, vastly different. These different perceptions have shaped the West's contemporary negative image of Africa which, as this paper demonstrates, is seriously challenged today by many African scholars.
