Abstract/Summary:
This study reviews contending Marxian theories of development both within the capitalist world economy and Canadian political economy. Based on a world systems analysis, the study discusses the emergence and nature of the capitalist world economy. More specifically, trends and developments in Canadian political economy are located within the capitalist world system with special reference to the role and nature of the capitalist state.;The limitations of a number of contending Marxian theories of development are elaborated. An alternative perspective and explanation of global economic and political developments is presented. Moreover, an interpretation of the method of historical materialism is elaborated in order to derive an analysis of capitalist development that is theoretically valid and historically accurate.;Finally, contending interpretations of Canadian political economy are reviewed in light of the theoretical and methodological concepts derived from an analysis of capitalism as a world system. Furthermore, an interpretation of historical and contemporary trends in the development of Canadian political economy, located within the parameters of the capitalist world system, is presented. The study provides an analysis of the dialectic between national and global economic and political developments with an application to Canadian political economy.
