Abstract/Summary:
This thesis project examines the impact of globalization on the development of sub-Saharan Africa over the past three decades, with an emphasis on three country case studies of Ghana, South Africa, and Tanzania. The selection is based on geographic locations, colonial and post-colonial histories, the different stages of development of societies, the impact and effectiveness of structural reforms, and the role of natural resources in economic development. In Chapters II, we provide a critical review of the literature on globalization, economic development, foreign direct investment, and governance in sub-Saharan Africa. Chapters III through V present three country case studies of Ghana, South Africa, and Tanzania, respectively, paying particular attention to the role of globalization and trade liberalization, and their impacts on the economic growth and development of those countries; and the determinants, trends and prospects of foreign direct investment inflows in Ghana, South Africa, and Tanzania (such as market size, openness to trade, the exploitation of natural resource endowments, infrastructure, political stability, governance, public service reform, and the rule of law), and their effects on the economic growth and development of the region. In Chapter VI, we conclude by examining the opportunities for Ghana, South Africa, and Tanzania, and the rest of sub-Saharan African countries to effectively participate in the global economy with ongoing deep structural changes.
