Abstract/Summary:
Commemorating the Defense of Baltimore, 1815-2015 examines public memory and public history of the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812. From the first anniversary of the battle to the present, commemorations have shaped public memory of the battle. This research seeks to examine how the September 1814 event has been remembered, focusing on the centennial in 1914 and bicentennial in 2014, and what factors have shaped the image of Baltimore as the birthplace of the Star-Spangled Banner. This paper includes a static copy of a public, digital history project created for the Battle's bicentennial in collaboration with the nonprofit organization Baltimore Heritage. The paper discusses how this digital history project fits into the overall picture of commemoration.
